Valentine's Day
10 Romantic Ideas for Staying in on Valentine’s Day
Love is in the air! And it couldn’t be coming at a better time! Forget those naysayers who claim Valentine’s Day is only made up by Greeting Card companies (not true – see how Valentine’s Day began,) who cares?! Regardless of origin, a day where we celebrate love – not just romantic love anymore reserved only for couples – but love for all the special people in our life is definitely a welcome holiday in our book! Here at McNamara Florist, Indianapolis’s best flower shop, we love any occasion that celebrates love. Below, we’ve listed our favorite stay-at-home date ideas for a perfectly romantic and fun Valentine’s Day.
How to Celebrate Valentine’s Day at Home
Netflix & Chill
Overlook the bad rap this phrase has received – when done right, enjoying a movie with your special love can be a romantic and intimate experience. Just don’t make it like any other old movie night, spruce it up with fresh flowers, upscale snacks, champagne or expensive wine, and low lighting. Enjoy romantic movies or a favorite movie both of you enjoy.
Game Night
There’s nothing like a little competition with your SO to get the endorphins going. Pull out a game of scrabble, trivial pursuit, or chess and pair with some good wine, cozy jammies, and scented candles. This will be a game night to remember!
Cook a Gourmet Dinner
Instead of spending hundreds of dollars this year to go out to a fancy restaurant, cook up a gourmet meal together and have a lot more fun. From chopping, to seasoning, and tasting, cooking together creates an enjoyable experience where the reward is a delicious gourmet dinner prepared just the way you like it. Unsure of your cooking skills, then check out the next idea.
Take an Online Class
From cooking to dancing, painting to baking, there are a plethora of premier online classes presented by masters of their craft. Look through YouTube or visit a site like MasterClass.com and watch famous chefs like Gordon Ramsey teach you how to cook. It’s fun, educational, and romantic!

Set the Mood
To make Valentine’s Day more special than any other day, set a romantic mood with beautiful bouquets of glamorous fresh flowers. Also, take some time to decorate with hearts and cupids, light candles, play romantic music, dress in your best clothes, and have a memorable Valentine’s Day at home.
Get Cozy by the Fire
It’s still pretty cold in some areas when Valentine’s Day rolls around, so bundling up in front of a warm fire is a romantic way to spend some time outdoors. Play some games, eat s’mores, gaze up at the night sky, or just bask in the glow of the fire one with your favorite person or people. It’s a glorious experience.
Plan a Dream Vacation
Get excited about a future trip with your boo, or your whole family, by planning out where you would go, what you visit, and where you would stay. Reviewing sites, attractions, and restaurants to plan the perfect trip is a great way to spend the evening.
Get Crafty
Don’t rush to the crowded greeting cards aisle just to purchase a mass-produced, generic card (sorry but not sorry Hallmark), and make one instead! This is a fun Valentine’s Day activity you can get the whole family involved in. All you need are scissors, markers, glue, and paper and you’ll end up with original, keepsake memories of cards made from the heart.
Spread the Love
Send Flowers
Know someone who might be feeling lonely on Valentine’s Day, or perhaps could just use a pick-me-up? Then send them flowers! There’s no better way to let someone know you care about them than by sending flowers.
Pay It Forward
Spread the love of Valentine’s Day by doing something kind. Pick up the tab for someone’s coffee, leave a basket of cookies or flowers on your neighbor’s porch, give compliments, or pass out flowers to random people. Small acts of kindness like these really make a big difference in people’s lives.
Love Yourself
If you happen to be alone on Valentine’s Day this year, then show yourself some love. Indulge in a favorite meal, give yourself a spa treatment, watch your favorite show, or go online shopping! A day of love means showing love to yourself as well as others.
It’s easy to get bogged down in everyday life, which is why a holiday like Valentine’s Day is so important. It forces us to take a moment and show how much we love the people in our lives. Have a Happy Valentine’s Day!
