In the News: Indy chocolate, flower shops keeping prices low despite tariffs

As tariffs increase, traditional Valentine’s Day treats, like chocolates and flowers, are being affected. A classic bouquet of red roses for Valentine’s Day can cost customers about 10 dollars more today than it did five years ago. FOX59/CBS4 visited McNamara Florist, the premier flower shop in Indianapolis, to learn more ahead of the holiday.

Erin Bruno, vice president of sales and marketing, clarified that the flower shop’s price increases are necessary as McNamara is being charged more per stem. Most of the floral inventory is imported from Colombia and Ecuador, including everyone’s favorite Valentine’s Day bloom, red roses. Naturally, red roses have always been a premier bloom, so it makes sense that their price tag has increased if you’re looking back pre-2020.

In addition to tariffs on fresh flowers, wrapping materials, fuel, and other delivery costs have also increased. However, small businesses in Indianapolis are doing everything they can to keep the extra charges away from their customers.

If you’re buying flowers for loved ones, or even yourself, one way to avoid the rising costs of roses is to purchase a seasonal arrangement featuring a variety of fresh blooms. There is always a wide range of options for McNamara customers, catering to all budgets.
